DARC‐MARS Playday ‐ How to Work HF
On our next joint “play day” with the MARS group we’d like to offer up a “Get on HF Primer”. We know many hams have their General Class license, but have yet to enjoy our shortwave frequencies. This is probably for a number of reasons; some technical, some social, and “all” because HF represents its own challenges in amateur radio not generally encountered for technicians on VHF/UHF communications. Our plan is on May 12th, at 10a.m. to set up an HF station (with help from the “newbies” and begin transmitting on HF. We’ll provide the “cheat sheet” with “common lingo”, standard operating procedures and “band plan”, a list of nets one can check into, and a chance to be paired with a seasoned operator who will answer all your questions about HF and how to handle contacts you’ll most certainly make on HF.
Join us at 10AM at the Carrollton Central Branch Library at: 1700 Keller Springs Rd Carrollton, TX 75006 TEL: (972) 466-3360.
We’ll be working out of one of the work rooms in the library so just ask one of the librarians when you arrive. |

A group of us from the Irving Amateur Radio Club will be hosting an ARRL Kids Day event at the National Scouting Museum in Irving on January 8 from 1 to 5 PM. We will have a couple of HF and VHF/UHF radios going, try to make some satellite contacts and introduce museum visitors to fun aspects of amateur radio. Admission to the museum on Sundays is free so if you know of Scouts, Scouters or troops/packs that would be interested in a fun outing that Sunday, please let them know about this event.
We will also be looking for on the air contacts especially on the 146.72 and 442.400 repeaters so if you can not make it to the Museum, get some youth involved from the other end of the connection and join us.
Hope to see you on the air or at the museum.
Would Dallas ARC be willing to post a notice of our Kids Day event on your web site and promote it on any upcoming nets?
Thanks much for your help.
