Recently a call for materials went out on the 'home' page of this website and at meetings. Generously, several members have dug through their files and turned up several items that will appear here as soon as the 'web guy' is able to steal time to do so.
First up... turn your history dial back... back to...
Comet Kahotek... nope - too far.
Go back up and stop at Y2K — and Party like it's 1999...
Len Carlson (K4IWL), former club president, was gracious to send in some archeological materials and hard evidence of club activities at Y2K. Quoting Len:
Even though Y2K is not very old, it was a very important tool in bringing the DARC back into the consciousness of the DFW-Metroplex as a leader and that we were the club that was responsible for the proclamation from the Mayor of Dallas. It's time that we show the future what can be done and was done in the past.
The first archeological piece is the content of a flyer that went to all the Dallas area clubs. The club setup in Ferris Plaza using the special event call sign K2M representing the dawn of the new "2nd Millennium". The Club operated on local repeaters, HF bands and Amateur TV:
The Crew Letter shows the preparation that was going on. Even a 10m antenna was requested — 10 meters? ... oh, yeah, sunspots! December 1999 - January 2000 was near the start of the first peak of twin-peaked Solar Cycle 23.
Working W5FC would gain you a Y2K Certificate, suitable for framing. Missed out? You can print this one out — if your callsign is W5AAN.
The club received a Proclamation for it's efforts from Mayor Ron Kirk, and the week of December 27, 1999 was declared Amateur Radio Emergency Service Week.
Len also contributed a W5FC Club Roster - 1983. Dot Matrix! And 7-digit phone numbers.
