There was an error in the President Corner of the newsletter. I wanted to share the information below with you. A correction will be published by Don and re-posted to the website asap.

It was not Joan who passed away... It was my mother, Nancy Griffith Mercer, who was Whit's daughter. She was only 61. Please, please make the correction as soon as you can.

The Dallas Amateur Radio Club (DARC) and the Metrocrest Amateur Radio Society (MARS) will be participating in a joint "play day" antenna build, February 11th, at the Josey Ranch Library. Please read through the list of items for the NVIS antenna. Some you will have to buy, others provided by US! In any case, you'll have a fully resonant 40 meter N

Announcement:
The DARC Morse Code on the Air will begin Jan. 9th 7:15 in the evening. Please have a pencil and paper and a 2 meter rig set to the 2m frequency. Participants will go from no knowledge of Morse Code to 5 WPM by April. An optional test with "certificate of completion" and bragging rights for successful completion. Each class will be 45 minutes in length, 5 days a week (Monday through Friday) through April. We will have optional make up classes on Saturdays as required and requested.

What are active components and what are passive components. What is a resistor? Wire wound and carbon! What's the difference and why it is important.
Passive components:
What is a capacitor? Used for filters. Passes AC. What is an inductor? Winding of wire/coil - air/iron - would pass DC. Capacitor/inductor - band pass circuit. Or filter out a frequency.
What is a diode? Allows current in one direction. A rectifier.
Active Components:
What is a transistor? Semi-conductor material. NPN/NPN types. Controlled by the Base of the transistor. How to check a transistor if it is good (or not).
What is an SCR? Once turned on it cannot be turned off. Good for controlling large amounts of power. Acts as a switch. Like a mechanical relay.
Electromechanical Relay: Electromagnet that pulls a switch open or closed. Also used in antenna relays. Latching relays, to switch components in and out.
Integrated Circuit: Circuits miniature
Op-Amps: A popular IC used to amplify signals and used in our radios.
Tips: Bad microphone connectors/cables.

73 Round: W9VE had the following comments: Crowbar circuits use a SCR to prevent the power supply from shorting out using a "crowbar circuit". Relays - were people who would pass a message from person to person. It was used in the first telegraphs. After 100 to 200 miles the signal would be too weak. The would use an electromagnet to operate a switch, to strengthen the signal and restart a clean signal.

The DARC Morse Code on the Air will begin Jan. 9th 7:15 in the evening. Please have a pencil and paper and a 2 meter rig set to the 2m frequency. Each class will be 45 minutes in length and begin at 7:15PM CT, 5 days a week (Monday through Friday) through April. We will have optional make up classes on Saturdays as required and requested.
You do not need to be a member of the DARC, just have an interest in learning amateur radio's original digital mode.

A group of us from the Irving Amateur Radio Club will be hosting an ARRL Kids Day event at the National Scouting Museum in Irving on January 8 from 1 to 5 PM. We will have a couple of HF and VHF/UHF radios going, try to make some satellite contacts and introduce museum visitors to fun aspects of amateur radio. Admission to the museum on Sundays is free so if you know of Scouts, Scouters or troops/packs that would be interested in a fun outing that Sunday, please let them know about this event.
We will also be looking for on the air contacts especially on the 146.72 and 442.400 repeaters so if you can not make it to the Museum, get some youth involved from the other end of the connection and join us.
Hope to see you on the air or at the museum.
Would Dallas ARC be willing to post a notice of our Kids Day event on your web site and promote it on any upcoming nets?
